JOB TITLE:  Design and Analysis Engineer 3 - Electronic Systems Design & Analysis
LOCATION:

Summary: 

  • Develop high-fidelity mathematical models of dynamic systems (mechanical, electrical, thermal) using first-principles physics and system identification techniques.

  • Analyze system behavior for stability, linearity, and transient/steady-state responses.

  • Design and implement control strategies, including:

    • Classical control (PID, lead-lag)

    • Modern control (State-Space, LQG/LTR, Pole Placement)

    • Optimal, Robust (H∞, μ-synthesis), Adaptive, and Model Predictive Control (MPC)

  • Develop multi-variable control strategies for interconnected systems.

  • Utilize MATLAB/Simulink for simulation, analysis, and rapid prototyping of control systems.

  • Conduct extensive simulations to verify performance, stability, and robustness under varying conditions.

  • Develop and execute Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) and Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) tests.

  • Optimize control parameters for accuracy, speed, response, and energy efficiency.

  • Analyze real-world data to refine and improve algorithms.

  • Collaborate with software and firmware engineers to implement algorithms in C/C++, Python, or VHDL for embedded or FPGA systems.

  • Support system integration, commissioning, and troubleshooting of control-related issues.

  • Prepare and present detailed design specifications, simulation reports, and validation documentation.

  • Clearly communicate technical concepts across multidisciplinary teams.

  • This position is 100% onsite at one of the listed locations.

Requirements:

  • Active U.S. Top Secret security clearance

  • Bachelor’s degree and typically 5+ years of engineering experience, or a Master’s degree with 3+ years, or a Ph.D. with relevant experience (ABET accreditation preferred but not required.)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, or Chemistry

  • 4+ years of experience designing, modeling, and implementing control algorithms for dynamic systems

  • 4+ years of experience with MATLAB/Simulink (including Control System, MPC, Optimization, and Simscape toolboxes)

  • 3+ years of programming experience in C/C++ or Python for algorithm implementation or data analysis

  • Willingness to work variable shifts, including evenings and weekends

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen (as defined by ITAR).

Preferred Skills:

  • 9+ years of related experience, or equivalent education and experience

  • Ph.D. in a relevant engineering discipline

  • Experience with multiple advanced control techniques (e.g., MPC, LQR, robust, or adaptive control)

  • Strong foundation in control theory, state-space methods, and stability analysis

  • Expertise in linear algebra, differential equations, and optimization

  • Experience with dynamic system modeling and system identification

  • Hands-on experience with HIL/SIL testing and real-time control systems

  • Familiarity with RTOS and embedded control systems development

  • Experience developing control systems for precision instruments such as telescopes (pointing accuracy, vibration, thermal stability)

  • Proficiency with additional simulation tools such as LabVIEW

  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and technical documentation skills
